Muslim extremists with links to the Islamic State group have staged a jailbreak in the southern Philippines. Twenty-three detainees were set free following a series of similar incidents throughout the country. About 50 heavily armed members of the Maute group raided the local jail in the southern city of Marawi on Mindanao Island. Police said that the group freed eight of their comrades who were arrested barely a week ago. Fifteen other detainees, held for other serious offenses, also escaped in the raid.
