Two Japanese opposition parties, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), and the smaller Japan Innovation Party, have merged to put pressure on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party before the upper house elections are held this summer. Former DPJ leader Katsuya Okada was elected as chief of the new party, which has been named Minshinto, Japanese for “democratic party”.
