A new tax scheme on cross-border e-commerce has gone into effect, and it’s going to hit most Chinese consumers who purchase everyday consumer goods. Milk powder and other food with a price tag under 500 yuan, clothes, watches, and home appliances priced above 250 yuan now carry a tax of over 11 percent. For luxury goods priced above 10,000 yuan, the tax has doubled to over 60 percent.
