New UN sanctions: A signal of China-DPRK policy change

The UN Security Council has passed its toughest sanctions to date against the DPRK. The sanctions will result in all cargo going to and from the country being inspected. The resolution aims to cripple parts of the country’s economy that fuel its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. China believes sanctions are necessary to effectively curb the DPRK from further developing its nuclear facilities and missiles. It has reached key consensus with the United States and other members of the Security Council, but there are still important differences between the different members and their approaches towards the DPRK.
