Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said that the Delhi government would rehabilitate the slum dwellers of Shakur Basti and only then would any demolition take place.
Kejriwal made this statement after meeting Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, following Sunday’s late-night demolition drive by the Railways in Shakur Basti, which allegedly led to the death of an infant.
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the demolition of the 1,200 slum units at Shakur Basti in West Delhi. The railways, on its part, said the removal of “fresh encroachment” was necessary for expanding the infrastructure and that the action had been taken after three notices, the first one with a March 14, 2015 deadline.
