Rakesh Maria was on Tuesday (September 8) moved to the Home Department as DG Home Guards. Ahmed Javed has replaced him as the new Mumbai police commissioner. The timing of Maria’s replacement when he was leading the investigation into the case sparked speculation about the reasons behind the decision. However, the government has stated that the decision is purely a procedural one and there is no political reason behind it. Mr. Ahmed Javed will take over as the Mumbai police commissioner from today itself. The government wanted the new commissioner would have time to settle in to handle the festival season that begins with Ganpati and goes on till Diwali, said Maharashtra Home Secretary KP Bakshi.
