Northeast China still in the bitter grip of winter

While many parts of China are “in blossom” with the spring season in full bloom, Hulunbuir in China’s northeast is still in the grips of “Old Man Winter”. A major snowfall blanketed the Inner Mongolia region at the turn of April, causing some highways to close, and even forcing the local airport to temporarily shut down. Although it may not look so warm, the snow is likely to protect forests along the Greater Khingan mountain range from wildfires. Elsewhere, heavy snow also hit Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China on Saturday, where temperature had been soaring to 26 degrees Celsius before the snow fell.
