Northern China pollution worsens as central heating turned on

Massive haze has descended across northern China this week as the area’s central heating has been turned on. Much of China’s domestic heating is centrally controlled by the authorities and was turned on this week in what is known as the annual winter heating season. Experts say that the combination of coal-burning and stable weather has given rise to the health-threatening air.
