Despite an unexpected rift, US President Barack Obama still met briefly with his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane. Philippine Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay said the meeting shows that the relationship between the two allies is “firm” and “strong.” The two leaders were due to hold talks earlier this week, but the White House cancelled the meeting after Duterte made a remark regarded as an insult to Obama.
