‘One country, two systems’ can continue beyond 2047, says Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said that ”one country, two systems” could last beyond 2047. This latest comment is widely seen as an attempt to appeal to her critics, who are concerned about Beijing’s clout over Hong Kong, and the city’s future. Mrs Lam has urged young people not to misunderstand the system, saying it has ensured education and stable jobs in Hong Kong. Under the accord that saw Hong Kong’s return to China from Britain, “‘one country, two systems” gives the city 50 years of autonomy. This means the city has been able to maintain its own capitalist economy and Western-style institutions, but that guarantee expires in 2047.
