Oscar Pistorius’s sentence forces South Africa to look at itself

The High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday handed down a six-year sentence to South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, nine years less than the mandatory guideline.
Calling him a “fallen hero”, the judge said in the ruling that the life of Pistorius shall never be the same. Pistorius’ defense team said they will not appeal.
Many South Africans have become emotionally invested in the Pistorius trial.
