In the wake the Sahitya Akademi exodus, prominent contemporary Hindi poet Manglesh Dabral said, “One of the ministers of the Modi cabinet said ‘that there is nothing to talk about writers. They come, drink alcohol and then they leave’. This is the perception of the BJP government and their ministers about writers and it saddens me.” He further added that in India authors have written in 24 different languages and a great body of literature and tradition has been produced by them. At least 16 writers have so far have returned their Sahitya Akademi award under the spiralling protest by litterateurs against “communal atmosphere” and “rising intolerance” following the killing of rationalist MM Kalburgi.
