The Philippine Supreme Court has finally decided on the legality of a defense agreement with the United States signed in 2014, after twice putting off a decision. The final vote was an overwhelming yes. The territorial dispute in the South China Sea is seen as one of the driving forces for the Philippines and the United States to forge closer military ties. The Philippines’ effort to strengthen its armed forces relies heavily on foreign aid, mainly from the US. However, national anti-US activists insist the agreement doesn’t benefit the country and allows for what they say is the illegal establishment of bases.
