Portugal’s president asks centre-right PM to form government

Portugal’s president asked coalition leader Pedro Passos Coelho to stay on as prime minister on Thursday, igniting protests from leftist parties that could quickly challenge a new centre-right government in parliament, where they have majority control. In a televised speech, President Anibal Cavaco Silva announced he had invited the Social Democratic party leader to head a new government.
