Post-coup Turkey: Death penalty would end EU membership bid

A spokesperson for Germany’s foreign ministry has said that Germany does not believe improved relations between Turkey and Russia will affect Turkey’s role in the NATO alliance. Sawsan Chebli also said the ministry had no knowledge of Turkey using torture against those accused of participating in the failed military coup, as has been alleged. She reiterated that reinstatement of the death penalty in Turkey would end its bid to join the European Union.
