Six people have been convicted for the gang-rape and murder of a college student in the Kamduni gang-rape case. Protests had broken out in Kolkata ahead of the gang-rape verdict. A college student was gang raped and was murdered in June 2013. Various organisations have started agitation inside the court complex on the eve of the judgement, demanding capital punishment for the accused. Tight security has been arranged inside the court complex fearing further agitations. The case was shifted to city sessions court from Barasat, as there was chances of attack on the accused and there was law and order problem. Out of the nine accused one died in custody. The accused had been charged with murder (Sec 302 IPC), gang rape – Sec 376 D IPC, conspiracy – Sec 120B IPC and destroying evidence. Following the gang rape at Kamduni, a village in Barasat area of North 24 Parganas has been brought within the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar police commissionerate. However, there is fear that the villagers who had united for punishment of the rapists might be attacked once the judgement is pronounced and for that they had alerted the administration over the issue.
