Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Speaks On Demolition Drive

Rejecting Aam Aadmai Party’s charge that an infant died during a demolition drive in west Delhi, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has claimed that the child died earlier. “The child had died much before the demolition drive,” Prabhu said in the Lok Sabha. “Despite repeated notices, the encroachers did not vacate the place. The whole exercise was completely peaceful. There was no mid-night operation as reported,” he added. The minister also said that he will meet Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today to discuss encroachment issues in other areas too. A fresh confrontation has raged between the Arvind Kejriwal Government and Centre over the death of the infant girl at a slum cluster during demolition drive. The AAP government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the demolition drive and death of the six-month girl though railways has said that the incident had “nothing to do with removal of encroachments”. Police had said prima facie the baby died due to suffocation after a heap of clothes fell on it when the parents were preparing to move out of the jhuggi and hence no case was registered.
