Rajiv’s assassins to stay in jail: SC

The Supreme Court today ruled that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins would remain in jail. This verdict comes as a constitutional issue arose from Tamil Nadu’s government’s decision to set free the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including the power of states to remit sentences. The verdict was pronounced by a five-judge constitution bench headed by chief justice H l Dattu, who would be demitting office tomorrow. A three judge-bench of the Supreme Court will later decide on the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to remit the life sentences of the convicts. The former Prime Minister was killed by LTTE suicide bomber while he was campaigning for election in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur in May 1991.
