Bilateral relations between China and Laos continue to show potential and promise. In 2011, both countries agreed to enhance security on the Mekong River to tackle trans-national crimes. In 2016, they vowed to fight terrorism and drug-related crimes. In 2016, bilateral trade revenue reached 2.3 billion US dollars, and Chinese investment in Laos reached 5.4 billion US dollars. Infrastructure wise, the China-Laos railway to be completed in 2020 is the first overseas route connecting the Southeast Asian country with China’s vast railway system.
