Raul Castro re-elected as First Secretary of Cuba’s Communist Party

Raul Castro won a second and final five-year term as First Secretary of Cuba’s Communist Party at its closing session of the 7th Congress on April 19 in Havana.

His elder brother and former leader of Cuba Fidel Castro attended the session and expressed support for the process of economic and social reforms anchored by Raul in his last five years as party leader and president of the island state.

The congress vowed to back steps toward more foreign investment and a growing private sector of small businesses in the next five years, but Raul cautioned that such changes would not be rushed.
