Recycling in China: not so efficient — 20150731

Shanghai is one of the eight cities testing garbage sorting since 2000. But most of the garbage that could have been recycled ends up elsewhere.

“Among the 20,000 tons of garbage, 85% is renewable and recyclable. The disposal through burning or land-filling not only wastes resources, but pollutes the environment,” says Dr. Wang Yunfei, researcher with the Academy of Circular Economy and Technology, Tongji University.

Experts recommend that the government should encourage more participation of the private sector. They believe that will help boost the industry and address environmental challenges.
