Researcher clarifies his report’s conclusions about smog and drug-resistant bacteria

A Swedish researcher who authored a report indicating Beijing’s polluted air was a possible source of transmission of drug-resistant bacteria has moved to calm fears whipped up since the research went viral. Joakim Larsson, director of the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research at the University of Gothenburg, told reporters on Sunday that it would take a rare set of circumstances for people breathing polluted air to be infected with such bacteria.
