Ringing in Year of the Monkey in SW China

When the clock stroke 12 on Monday, ten representatives from the Wuhou District in the Chinese city of Chengdu tolled an ancient bell in Wuhou Temple to usher in the New Year.

“I’ve decided to come to Chengdu, because I am really interested in Chinese culture. Chengdu looks like a lovely city to live in. Ringing the bell symbolizes the coming of the New Year. It’s obviously a very important part of Chinese culture.”

The Wuhou Temple is the most famous and influential temple dedicated to Zhuge Liang, a historic figure in the Three Kingdoms period of China.

Zhuge was a renowned military strategist for Emperor Liu Bei of the Shu Kingdom, who lived from 181 to 234 AD.

Over the year, Zhuge has come to be the personification of noble character and intelligence.
