Russia says military conscription unrelated to Syria

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Saturday that his country’s military operation in Syria is aimed at protecting Russian citizens.
Earlier this week, Kremlin Administration Aide Sergei Ivanov said that Moscow had to protect its people from terrorism.
He said action is necessary in Syria to avoid conflict later in Russia.
On Wednesday, Russian combat jets began airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria, at the request of the country’ s authorities.
On the same day, Putin signed a decree drafting more than 147,100 men to serve in the Russian military.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said later the decree is not related to Russian military involvement in Syria.
