In the wake of three illegal miners being trapped in an abandoned gold mine in the South African city of Johannesburg over the weekend, the country’s Chamber of Mines on Monday said illegal mining remained a serious problem for the industry and South Africa amid rising unemployment and poverty. These illegal practices are draining the country of much-needed revenue, in the form of earnings and taxes. CCTV’s Angelo Coppola takes a look at who’s involved and the ripple effects on the economy.
