Scientists simulate first-ever ‘Mars walk’ on Kaunertal glacier in Austria

German meteorologist Carmen Kohler and Spanish space technology expert Inigo Munoz Elorza participated in a simulation of a potential Mars-walk in the Kaunertal valley, in the Austrian Alps, on Wednesday. The two specialists walked the surface of the glacier, which consists of a mixture of ice and rubble, corresponding to the surface of the Red Planet, wearing 50 kg of space equipment each, including suits and helmets at an altitude of 2,700 metres.
