Sikh Leaders Under Arrest Ahead Of Jathedar Speech

In a major crackdown by the Punjab Police ahead of the Jathedar speech at the Golden temple, police arrested radical Sikh group leaders on Wednesday (November 11). Organisers of the Sikh conclave ‘Sarbat Khalsa’, Mann, Mohkam Singh and Gurdeep, were arrested on Wednesday. Challenging the authority of Sikhism’s highest religious body, several Sikh organizations came together on Tuesday and held a Sarbat Khalsa on the outskirts of Amritsar, triggering fears of a revival of the Khalistan movement as the conclave chose former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s assassin Jagtar Singh Hawara as the jathedar (head priest) of the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhism in the Golden Temple complex.
