Singapore’s Peranakan Indians: The Chetti (Chitty) Melaka | CNA Insider

The Chetti (or Chitty) Melaka come from Hindu roots, but honour Buddha, Jesus and other religions. They mark the Chinese Qingming festival. Their language is a creole: Malay patois mixed with Chinese dialect and Tamil.

Meet the Peranakan Indians of Singapore and Malaysia, whose ancestors were traders from Tamil Nadu who settled in Melaka in the 14th  century – and whose culture is in danger of dying out today.
