South Korea celebrates its independence from Japan

Tuesday marks South Korea’s 97th anniversary of the March 1st Movement for Independence from Japan. At an event to commemorate the anniversary, President Park Geun-hye urged the Japanese government to fulfill its December agreement. Under the agreement, Japan promised an apology and a cash fund for surviving comfort women, or wartime sex slaves, in South Korea, on the condition that Seoul regards the matter as finally settled.
