South Korea may move THAAD site over health concerns by residents

South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye has said a new site could be considered within Seongju county for the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system. Park made the remarks after meeting with lawmakers from the province where Seongju county is located. South Korea and the US earlier agreed to deploy one THAAD battery in the county, drawing criticism. Large protests are continuing in the area, as residents worry about their security and potential pollution. If deployed, the defense system may affect the sale of locally grown fruits and produce, which are the county’s economic mainstay.
