Though China is often a strong contender for medals on the global sports scene, its sports industry remains in a less developed stage, accounting for less than 0.6% of total GDP. That’s way lower than the US level of nearly 3%, and the global average of around 2%.
But now, analysts believe the industry looks set to embrace a golden decade: China’s rising population of middle class citizens is increasingly willing to spend on a healthy lifestyle. The government is looking to boost grass-roots participation and develop the sports industry into one of the pillars of the economy.
