Defending Government’s decision to discontinue postage stamps on Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, IUnion Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday (September 16) said that government feels that nation should commemorate all leaders. “Stamp controversy is unnecessary, government is trying to broaden number of leaders to be honored by issuing new stamps,” he said. “Consultative committee has suggested replacing Indira Gandhi with Yoga on inland letter,” he added. Yesterday, it was announced that the NDA government has decided to replace Builders of Modern India theme, which included stamps of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, with Makers of India theme. However, stamps of Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and Mother Teresa have been retained. The new definitive theme, which means stamps for regular services, brings in host of eminent personalities like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Shivaji, Maulana Azad, Bhagat Singh, Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Vivekananda and Maharana Pratap.
