State of calamity declared in the Philippines after storms

Philippine President Benigno Aquino on Saturday declared a state of national calamity to accelerate the rescue and rehabilitation efforts in areas hit by Typhoon Melor. Aquino directed all government departments and agencies to execute rescue and recovery work in accordance with related operational plans and directives. Reuters reported that the typhoon killed at least 41 people and injured 20.
