Russia’s proposal to establish four humanitarian corridors has raised concerns in the West that the passages would flush out Aleppo before Syrian government forces make a final push to retake the city. US Secretary of State John Kerry said cooperation between Moscow and Washington could turn sour if the announcement proves deceitful. French authorities have also expressed concerns, saying the initiative to open up corridors for civilians and surrendering fighters is not a credible response. However, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has welcomed Russia’s initiative but warned that such operations should be carried out in full respect of international humanitarian law.
