The UN special envoy for Syria on Wednesday announced a “temporary pause” until February 25 of Syrian peace talks in Switzerland aimed at ending the country’s five-year civil war. Staffan de Mistura, the envoy, issued the statement late Wednesday night, and said that the talks are possibly to resume “much earlier” than February 25. The head of the Syrian government delegation blamed the opposition for the suspension, saying that they act under the orders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey “to bring about the talks’ failure”.
