Syrian army advances on ISIL’s ‘capital’

Syrian government forces, backed by Russian fighter jets, have advanced on Raqqa Province. The provincial capital, Raqqa city, also the de facto capital of the Islamic State, is one of the last remaining strongholds of the terrorist group, and a key target for those seeking to destroy the militant’s self-declared caliphate state. The Syrian army will next attempt to reclaim the country’s largest dam on the Euphrates River and a strategic road that connects Raqqa city with Aleppo Province to the north.
