Syrian government forces have retaken a hospital in the city of Deir al-Zour after it came under attack from Islamic State on Saturday. The militant group’s assault on the Assad Hospital came after it launched a dawn offensive on the besieged eastern Syrian city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Islamic State had killed at least 35 members of the Syrian armed forces and detained some medical staff. The fighting in and around the hospital had also reportedly killed at least 24 militants. The Islamic State’s Amaq news agency said the attack that stormed the hospital had cut a supply route between a Syrian army base and a nearby airport.
