Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou on Thursday visited Taiping Island, the largest among the South China Sea islands. Ma met the people stationed on the island and delivered a speech. Ma said that Taiwan will work to end disputes, pursue peace and reciprocity and promote joint development in the South China Sea. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in response to a question concerning Ma’s visit that the Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are duty-bound to safeguard the ancestral property of the Chinese nation.
