Last year’s stampede has contributed to renewed tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and Iranian pilgrims won’t participate in this year’s Hajj for the first time in nearly three decades. On Friday, thousands of Iranians held an anti-Saudi Arabia protest in the capital Tehran accusing the Saudis of “blocking the path to Allah.” Officials have also criticized Saudi Arabia’s lack of transparency over last year’s deadly stampede, which saw more than 2,000 pilgrims killed.
