Seongju county in South Korea has seen continuous demonstrations since the government announced the US THAAD anti-ballistic missile defense system would be deployed there. But the installation is also increasing tension across the region, with many of South Korea’s neighbors feeling threatened by what they feel is an unnecessary upgrade. So what’s Seoul’s ultimate strategy? Teng Jianqun, Director of the Department for American Studies and a senior research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, and Professor Balbina Hwang, Visiting Professor at Georgetown University, who also serves as a senior advisor to the US State Department, debate that question for us.
