Back in July 2015 when the BJP led NDA government launched its scheme the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana under the skill India program. PM Modi’s promise to skill 40 crore people by 2022 brought hope for the future of the country. In 2016, the cabinet approved ₹12,000 crore rupees towards skill development. The ministry was then headed by Rajiv Pratap Rudy but soon enough this ambitious government scheme ran into hot waters. A report by the Sharada Prasad committee set up in 2016 to examine the functioning of the scheme revealed that an amount of ₹2,500 crore rupees of public funds was spent to benefit the private sector.
