The heart of giving: Kenya hosts marathon to support slum children

The 6th edition of Sotokoto Marathon was held in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Sunday. The event attracted more than 500 runners, most of whom are slum children.

Wakiihuri, who is a former Kenyan long-distance runner winning marathon titles at several world class championships said for the slum children living in Kenya, the biggest challenge is the lack of opportunity to discover and develop their talents, that is why he has given this year’s marathon the theme of the heart of giving.

Lovian Niteshi, a 14-year-old girl from the Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa, was one of the young runners of the marathon, she and her schoolmates were upbeat about the achievement they’ve made in the race.

A part from organizing marathon, Wakiihuri also runs a Kibera running club which trains children and youth in the slum.
