“How dare the police do this? In any other country police would be charged with assault,” said columnist Shobhaa De, with reference to the Allahabad incident where a few cops caned and punished young couples sitting together in public parks. She also questioned social activist Rahul Easwar’s logic of creating a “parent state” in the society.

“The state cannot take over that role of telling people what is right and what is wrong, particularly if they happen to be adults,” she said. On the first debate of THE NEWSHOUR tonight, Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami and a host of panellists comprising Anindita Sarbadhikari, Filmmaker; Ramona Crasto, Victim of Harassment; Shobhaa De, Author & Columnist; Aditi Mittal, Stand-Up Comedian & Writer; Dhruv Suri, Advocate; Rahul Easwar, Social Activist; Pandit Ajay Gautam, Religious Guru & Founder; Adv Sanjeev Punalekar, Speaker & Advisor, Sanatan Sanstha; Vikram Singh, Former DGP, Uttar Pradesh, discussed if the police should indulge in moral policing and if the right to privacy be made a fundamental right.
