Timor-Leste and Australia test the waters of UN law

Timor-Leste’s move to escalate maritime border negotiations with Australia to the UN will be a “test case” for international maritime law, said Timor-Leste’s Foreign Minister Hernani Coelho.

The half-island nation recently launched a Compulsory Conciliation process under the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), with the aim of concluding an agreement with Australia on permanent maritime boundaries.
