Truce to take effect at sundown Monday in Syria

The ceasefire in Syria brokered by Russia and the United States is due to begin at sunset on Monday. The truce will initially last for 48 hours, and could then be renewed. However, dozens of civilians were killed over the weekend in a fresh burst of violence. Once the truce comes into force, Turkey plans to send an aid convoy to the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made a rare public appearance on Monday in the town of Daraya outside the capital Damascus, which was previously a rebel stronghold. He attended prayers for the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha.
