TIMES NOW speaks with gender rights activist Trupti Desai after the Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra government to implement provisions of the Maharashtra Hindu places of public worship act. According to this act there can be no discrimination in places of public worship. The HC said if men are allowed in place of worship, allow women too.Trupti Desai of Bhumata Ranragini Brigade has been spearheading a campaign seeking to break the age-old tradition banning entry of women in inner sanctum sanctorum of temples. Many a time the activist and members of its group tried to visit the Lord Shiva temple at Trimbakeshwar and the Shani Shingnapur temple near Shirdi but were detained by the police as they were barred from entering the temple premises. The debate over the issue in Maharashtra escalated after a woman last year tried to enter and offer prayers at the Shani Shingnapur temple in ‘breach’ of the age-old practice of prohibiting entry of women This had prompted the temple committee to suspend seven security men and the villagers to perform purification rituals.
