The U.S. has repeatedly sent its warships and military aircraft to closely sail or fly past South China Sea islands. Yet, the U.S. State Department has gone to great lengths to portray China as “a threat” to freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. The truth is that freedom of commercial navigation is no problem there. But can warships go anywhere as Washington pleases? Don’t blur the line between commercial navigation and military operation.
