More than a million people gathered in Turkey’s Istanbul on Sunday to denounce last month’s failed military coup. The rally was called by President Tayyip Erdogan, who has been defiant towards criticism from the West over widespread purges and detentions. Erdogan has vowed to rid Turkey of the network of followers of the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. He accused Gulen’s followers in the security forces, judiciary, and civil service of orchestrating the attempted coup and of plotting to overthrow the government.
