Turkey says it will continue to withdraw troops from northern Iraq, a move that could de-escalate tensions with Baghdad.
In a statement, Turkey’s foreign ministry acknowledges a “miscommunication” with Iraq over its recent deployment of troops to the Bashiqa military base.
Ankara deployed hundreds of troops to Bashiqa in early December, saying the force was part of an international mission to train and equip Iraqi forces to fight IS militants.
Baghdad slammed the move, saying it had never invited such a force.
Turkey began partially withdrawing troops from the area on Monday.
