Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he believes relations between Turkey and Russia will normalize “rapidly,” after he expressed regret for his country’s shooting down of a Russian warplane last year. Russian trade sanctions and moves to stop tourists traveling to Turkey have been in place since the Russian fighter jet was downed last November while on a mission in Syria, killing the pilot. Russian President Vladimir Putin had said those measures would not be lifted unless Erdogan apologized personally.
