Turkish President Erdogan expects ties with Russia to normalize “rapidly”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he believes relations between Turkey and Russia will normalize “rapidly,” after he expressed regret for his country’s shooting down of a Russian warplane last year. Russian trade sanctions and moves to stop tourists traveling to Turkey have been in place since the Russian fighter jet was downed last November while on a mission in Syria, killing the pilot. Russian President Vladimir Putin had said those measures would not be lifted unless Erdogan apologized personally.
